Buzzing With Possibility: The Tees Valley Creates: The Freelancer Network is Here
A buzz of creativity and energy filled the air as the Tees Valley Creates: The Freelancer Network officially launched, bringing together an eclectic mix of local freelancers, industry leaders, and cultural innovators. The event, held on Wednesday, November 13, marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the region's creative sector, offering a platform designed to empower and elevate the voices of Tees Valley's freelance community.
The launch event, which drew an impressive crowd of over 200 attendees, was a vibrant celebration of the area's creative talent. It featured dynamic panel discussions, networking opportunities, and standout performances from some of the region's most exciting talents, including Tees Valley Artist of the Year Scott Turnbull and Teesside rapper Shakk. The atmosphere was electric, with the energy and enthusiasm from freelancers of all disciplines palpable—proof that Tees Valley is a hotbed of creativity.
Tees Valley Creates: The Freelancer Network isn't just a network—it's a game-changing initiative offering freelancers the chance to connect, collaborate, and thrive in a supportive and dynamic environment. Membership is free, giving access to a wealth of resources, professional and personal development opportunities, one-on-one support, and even a micro-grant programme to help towards creative activities. The network also advocates for freelancers' needs, helping to raise their profile and ensure their contributions to the local economy and creative landscape are recognised and supported.
With freelancers making up 32% of the region's creative workforce—well above the national average of 14%—the launch of this network comes at a crucial time. The Tees Valley is home to a diverse and rapidly growing freelance community, and Tees Valley Creates will provide them with the tools, connections, and support they need to not only survive but thrive in an ever-changing landscape.
The project is being led by ARC Stockton Arts Centre and delivered in collaboration with a consortium of seven key local organisations, with backing from the Tees Valley Mayor and Tees Valley Combined Authority. In his address at the event, Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen shared his enthusiasm for the network’s potential:
"We have incredible freelance talent across a huge range of creative industries in our region, and it's vital that we put the right support in place to ensure they have the very best opportunities to succeed here at home. This network will give Tees Valley creatives a platform to showcase their work and access the resources they need to grow and succeed."
The importance of this initiative was echoed by Alison Gwynn, Chief Executive of North East Screen and Tees Valley Business Board Member, who noted that freelancers are the backbone of the creative industries, especially in TV and film. With a 76% increase in crew registration over the last two years due to the rise in regional production, the Tees Valley Creates network will ensure that local talent can meet the growing demand for skilled professionals across the creative sector.
ARC’s Chief Executive and Creative Director, Alexander Ferris, shared his excitement about the project, stating, "Freelancers are at the heart of the creative and cultural industries, and Tees Valley is home to an impressively diverse and talented pool. This network will provide the stability and support that freelancers need to build long-term careers in the region, and we are thrilled to lead this innovative project in partnership with TVCA and other key organisations."
With a growing network of creatives and an unwavering commitment to supporting their careers, Tees Valley Creates: The Freelancer Network is setting the stage for the next wave of talent to emerge from the region. The buzz around the launch proves that, with the right resources, Tees Valley is poised to become the creative freelancer’s ultimate destination.
